Increasing Instability in 10

I have been working on a pln/plp file for a single family house for some time

The file has gotten pretty complex with a lot of modelled elements and a lot of textures, everything is in the file no modules, a couple of weeks ago I switched over to 10, and everything seemed to be going well, renderings were faster and what not

But then I started getting frequent crashes while doing intensive 3d tasks in the 3d window like editing objects and flying around a lot.

Then Renderings kept stalling out indefinitely

Now Archicad is crashing frequently while just drawing or editing elements in the floor plan view, archicad just disappears, sometimes I don't even get the little autosave window upon reopening

I had converted the file to a teamwork file and I recently converted it back to pln, I know that I have a few squirly gdl objects because I get several bad parameter reports every time I open the file

What can I do? I have got to be cranking out the CDs and I keep crashing

I've had the same behavior with:

a) conflicting libraries loaded
- try unloading the standard AC9 library -the standard AC10 library should replace it entirely (you'll have to retain customized library parts, though)

and

b) corrupt elements (rare)
- try isolating it by updating 3D while turning off layers etc

Thanks, is there a way to unload the 9 library and Load the 10 Library without losing every door, window, & appliance? even library parts that are the same in both libraries don't automatically load from the 10 library

I have deleted the offending objects, which were a couple of windows and a bed I had modified

I still have duplicate library parts and it's still crashing, although I have had duplicate library parts forever even before the switch to 10 and it never was a problem, which is why I have ignored it until now

One method is to transfer parameters between the 9 parts and the 10 parts in the object default settings dialog box. This is not especially fast and needs to be done for each similar group of elements. You must have both libraries loaded and it is useful to use the find feature in the object default settings dialog box such that you can see the same object in both 9 and 10. The procedure is to select the items that you want to "switch" to the 10 library, open the object default settings, search for the same part in the 10 library and alt/cntrl - opt/cmd click on the 10 part to transfer the parameters from the equivalent 9 part that was selected in the floor plan view. Clear as mud?

Mike, Always willing to learn something new. But I must be still in the "mud". ':?'

With each version up grade I have always duplicated my working library, and renamed it. e.g. I created My_Library as far back as 6.5 and since just renamed each duplicate the current version number.

So now it is My_Library 10.

Apart from adusting macros and various add ons through the upgrades all my parts work. There is never a problem when tweaking a library part as it is saved in the current version that is being used. Going back to previous projects that have not been saved as .pla files is not a problem.

For the last 10 years I have never loaded any GS default library as such.

I have always treated them as you would a "public library" ie. see what you need copy, together with reqiured macros and paste to your working library.

Some offices I've worked for, have had any and every library loaded, hugh file sizes.

As far as Kyle's comment about loading both 9 & 10 libraries, this is something I'd never do. Simply because, should you amend/tweak/update a 9 library part whilst working in 10 you render that part unusable in 9.

One of the most frequent comments made to me about AC is the difficulty in getting about the default library.

For a start the way the folder structure is set takes someone of Houdini's magic to find things quickly. ':?:'

It would not be out of the question to go in object by object and command control switch em, but is it really a problem to have the 10 library and the 9 library loaded? why can't I have all my 9 parts and some 10 parts?

Archicad is now crashing when I look at it funny, if it's calculating something and I get impatient and use my mouse wheel to zoom in it seems it will crash, but other times I have no idea, I'm going crazy and losing time

So far the only suggestion has been that it is because I have library objects loaded from the 9 library and the 10 library, are there any other reasons it might be crashing, as I said earlier it is a pretty complex model for a single family house

Why would you do this?

Loading just the 10 library will replace automatically most, if not all of your 9 parts - the ones that are in the default library, that is. The ones that are project specific and office specific one should convert anyway.

If I load the 10 library, and do not load the 9 library as well, all of my standard 9 objects like doors windows, and appliances and fixtures all just show up as dots? is this not supposed to be?

So far I've discovered that Door 'D1 Int', a few windows (particularly sash windows) and the WD Window door marker don't update with 10. But every thing else does.

Updateing the sash windows to 10 is a REAL pain. Yes, the parameter transfer method Mike talked about works to a point, but what was 'W Sliding Sash 1.gsm' in 9 doesn't have a corresponding part in 10 (it sort of does, but it's not exactly the same - the closest one i can find is 'W Double Hung 10'). When I transfer the parameters to this new window, the window resizes slightly, the sill changes it's dimensions, and whatever style I have set for my sashes are reset to 'no mullions'. grrr. so I need to do each window separatley. grrr again.

And using the sash window part from 9 has other problems. but I've already complained about that elsewhere.

My 9 parts are not recognized by the 10 library. Maybe it is a US library issue.

Kyle, it is hard to say what is causing you grief. Have you taken care of all the library part parameter errors?

Rod, the parameter transfer is similar to what you can do in the drawing/modeling environment, but enables you to transfer parameters between different library objects in the object default settings, window default setting or any other type of library part dialog box. This can be useful at times. I use to re-structure my libraries and re-adjust default settings to suit my needs, but found that I would miss out on some of the changes that new library parts offer as the program evolved and the time involved to do this was limiting. I a similar to you in that the default library organization leaves a lot to be desired, but some of the alternate ways to view the library have helped with this issue (find and subtype). My new methodology is using groups of favorites to get me quickly to the part and settings I need. This is not ideal either but it is much quicker to update between version upgrades. I update my favorites using the the method I described and then re-defining the favorites with the "current default". I save groups of favorites for each type of sheet (floor plan, site plan, elevations etc.) and any other categories that seem appropriate (fixtures and furniture, lighting and electrical, modeling elements). This of course requires screen real estate so you can always have your favorites palette open and big enough so you can quickly get at what you need.
