Linking Section Markers to Details

On my foundation plan (model view) just for example, I have markers I want to link to section type details. I don't show both ends of the section marker, just one end. The kind of marker you might place on a slab edge or at steps...that sort of thing.

I want that marker linked to a Detail. Often the Detail I need this linked to is a Detail created with the Detail Tool in a Section. The problem is that I can link that sort of little marker to a Section and have all of the reference ID's work well in the Layout sheet but I can not seem to make this work if I try to link it to a Detail.

This seems like a very common way of referencing. Is there a special marker or something that needs to be used for this instead of a Section Marker ?

If a Detail Marker could be made to look like one of these little section markers I think my problem would be solved.

How are you doing this ?

Also, I need to be able to reference Details that are referenced in other Details. For example, a very common way of detailing is to make a cross section at small scale. Add a detail in the that seciton around the exterior wall, When you open that Typical Wall Section, it will have detail markers around the eave, each floor/ceiling, and at the foundation.

I don't like having to make a seperate "view set" or what ever it is called now, to do this very common task.

In the past with PlotMaker I was able to use a very very complicated work-around to do this. It was so complicated that I can't remember how to do it.

I am hoping that there is a simple way to do this now.

Tom,

I am going to try that.

The drawing to which you are referring must have first been placed on a layout, or you will get the "undefined" message.

someone please move this to the correct topic area. I accidently started it in the wrong place.

Yes Richard,

The the Layout is the only place the reference numbers are important unless you want to print directly from the model view.

It it true that you can only "Refer" to Sections?

Also, it looks like you can not "Refer" Details to anything. The dialog box will be empty when you try to do this.

It looks as though this has been intentionally made not to work even though it seems like the program could do this very easily.

It is true that you can only refer to other sections, but there is no reason that you can't use section windows exactly like detail windows. (Used to do that before AC9, anyway.) Just put a bunch of empty section markers on a separate story or a hidden layer.

I think you may have found a bug with the Details' "refer to drawing". You should get the honor of reporting it.

Of course you can get what you want in many ways. It's keeping track of the reference numbers in the Layouts that I am mostly concerned about.

The gap here is realized when you want to reference a Detail from a floor plan. To do this there is no section type marker that will keep the reference numbers straight in Layout.

Referencing "Details" (ones made with the Detail Tool) on floor plans from a little section marker seems like a very fundamental task that everyone needs to do from time to time, and we need to be able to do it with out having to configure some sort of work-around or out smarting the program.

I am not giving up on finding an "easy" solution for this.

I think Autotext may be part of the solution.

getting close to a solution but need some help.

" Set as Autotext Refrence" could also be part of a quick solution.

That was it. "Set as Autotext Reference. Is the "easy" solution I was looking for to keep track of the reference numbers in Layout properly.

After you "Set as Autotext Reference" a Detail, Drawing, Cross Section in your Layout it creates a new Autotext that you can place in the reference number area of your section. Now the reference marker in your Section will match the Detail or Drawing the Autotext was created with.

This is all I need now to get what I want with out a lot of effort.

I apologize for this example drawing it is only a quickie to use for illustrating the technique. The markers are not even in the correct location.

This sounds great, Steve. But I can't find any place in a section marker dialog box that will accept Autotext References. Where exactly are you placing this Autotext?
