Mesh and Model to interact ?

Anonymous

Hello,

I need to put a base on a shape that hasn't got a uniform level. In Sketchup you can " Interact with model " which means you place a square base beneath your object then you can cut away the excess based on the perimeter of the object.

The image shows the contour ( grey ) and the mesh ( black ), is there a accurate and easy way around for making the base follow the contour ?

Thank You

Sorry N, I am not sure what you are asking or what I am looking at in your screen shot (probably just me).

In plan if you have a 2D element shape you can activate the mesh tool (preset to what you want, or change later) and magic want the mesh onto that 2D shape.

You can add contours or nodes to the mesh, add or subtract from the mesh using SEO (Design> Solid Element Operators).

Is this what you are after?

Yes, I think that will work. It will take me a bit of time as the shapes are very curvy! It keeps coming up with the : region not found at this point " dialog, is there another way of doing it as I can't see each element as they overlap.

Thank You !

Hi again 'N',

I'm fairly sure you can't magic wand an object created with Objective directly. You may find it easier to trace your objects boundary on plan using 2d lines/splines, and then magic wand this. Temporarily turn off the object or copy the 2d line to one side to make it easier for the magic wand to find the edges.

The magic wand settings under the options menu will let you adjust the spacing of the nodes created so you don't have too many.

Once you have a flat mesh the shape you need, go into the 3d window and edit the node heights manually.

Hope that helps!

Hi Peter,

I've got that to fit fairly well, it's just a case of moving each node. When I'm in 3D view, the nodes don't snap the the contour in which I'm joining them to, is this ' right ' or do I need to activate something ?

Thank You

The mesh nodes will only snap to the nodes in the object. It won't recognise edges. Maybe snap it to the nearest node then adjust it by eye if it's still out.

Are there any tools in Objective that may help perhaps? I thought you could bend and twist stuff? (I don't know, I don't use it!)

I could try something with OBJECTiVE actually, but it only needs to look right in section for what I need it for...

Thanks

EDIT : I'm currently trying it with OBJECTiVE, and if I make several seperate profiles, I might have something that will work.

Is there any special tools that can tell me the heights of each part of the contour ( I seriously doubt it, but up until today I didn't know about the " magic wand ' either

Turn on gravity. Use the dimensioning tool, place level dimensions on the mesh surface in the floor plan view. Read about it in Help!

I've read about that, but when I place level dimensions on a new or exsisting mesh it places it as 0.00, then if I connect a mesh to these, they don't relate to the contour that I want to use... If it place them on the objects perimeter, they all stay the same level so again, it doesn't follow the contour.

Thank You

You must be making a mistake somewhere. Make sure the gravity is on and set for meshes - then add the level dimension marker anywhere over the mesh. that will link the marker to the mesh - and it will update as the mesh changes
