Offset Tool - Geometric Shapes

please disregard and figured out how to use column segment tool to achieve result. my apologies for the rant!

what is the simplest way to offset a rectangle to give it thickness, such as, steel tubes, or for that matter round steel columns with a thickness. is it this complicated or is it me? looked at videos but simply do not understand the sequencing of input information to obtain required result. hate to use the other cad word but man that was as easy as it got...

forgot to mention that this will become a complex object and used as either a beam or column and that is also causing headaches to define an object as a hollow a element.
