Orbiting - while in perspective mode or axonometric mode????

It has been suggested to me that I shouldn't be orbiting around my 'model' environment in a "perspective" mode, rather I should orbit around in "axonometric" mode and use the perspective mode to get my views by using the "walking man" feature???

What have the rest of you done?

Reason I orbit in perspective mode, is well, because that's how you can see quickly what view you are going to want to save/render.

Granted, I find that sometimes in the Perspective mode I lose myself in 3d space but.........for the most part, if you keep the mouse cursor point to somewhere in the center of the perspective view when you begin your orbiting sequences, then you will have a better chance of not getting lost in 3d space.

How do the rest of you move in 3d space in the model view (F5) environment to set up your views? in Axonometric mode or perspective mode???

thanks.

whoever suggested that to you should have it suggested back to them that there is no hard and fast rule for when to use each 3D mode!

it is really completely up to you to use whichever mode you feel most comfortable with to get the desired view you need. i generally don't even use the true 'orbit' mode at all - i prefer to simply hold down shift and use the temporary orbit mode whilst i'm working in the 3D window. much quicker! for fine tuning a view i do tend to use the 'explore' (walking man) mode. and i almost always never use the 3D window in axonometric . . . too ugly, distorted and completely at odds with the way the human eye views the world!

Well I did totally lose the model in the Perspective model and it took forever to reset the view. Ultimately it seemed to fix itself with a double click of the zoom wheel (after many attempts of this).

Has anyone else had this problem? What is the best solution for dealing with this or avoiding it? In Form Z I used to save a custom view to reset the camera incase this happed.

double-clicking the zoom wheel is the equivalent of using the 'fit in window' command. unfortunately it only works on a PC (unless this has been fixed in 11 - i haven't tried).

if i ever get 'lost' - which can happen if you try to orbit around in clear space (infinity?) - i have the 3D projection settings dialogue on the ALT-3 shortcut: as has been discussed here many times before, once in that dialogue, ALT-clicking in the plan extract window places the view target, SHIFT-clicking places the camera. be sure to check the camera and target heights too . . .

it's pretty painless!

How exactly do you accomplish this? I've tried to hold the shift key down but what other buttons, toggles, whatever do I need to be pressing to try this technique??

detailed explanation would help.

1) While holding the mouse press and hold center mouse button, AKA as the wheel

2) With other hand on keyboard, press and hold shift

3) Move mouse without letting go of the middle mouse button or the shift key.

1 and 2 can be switched.

It's the same result

yes - simply hold down shift whilst in the 3D window to invoke 'temporary orbit'. then use the middle mouse button (click-wheel/mighty mouse nipple/whatever) to orbit. no need to enter orbit mode, navigate, and then exit again before continuing working.

similar. but not the same. temporary orbit continually redraws when you pause. it's not as smooth as orbit mode for client demonstrations, but more convenient for working.

i am currnetly using archi cad 10 with my mighty mouse and the shift+scroll orbiting doesnt work for me anymore...
i just recently upgraded and am using the same mouse, computer etc.

any ideas why this is happening? :?:
