Organize new materials in subdirectories

How can I organize textures/materials in material settings into directories and subdirectories? Its ridiculous to have them one after another.

This is already a part of my wish in "New Material Settings" at:

... though it may be a bit buried in all the other parts.

In any case it is a very important need in its own right, besides being a necessary part of my more ambitious desires.
