Problem creating new material

Hi, I'm having a problem creating a new materiel. And can't figure out, what is wrong as I have done it many times before. I go to materials, duplicate, go to search and when I chose a picture (jpeg) of my new texture, click on it... it doesn't select it. What am i doing wrong?

Another problem - some materials that i created previously look black on a render image. I did press "Match with Internal Engine" and can't figure out what has gone wrong.

Please help!

This is very strange - I opened an image in Paint and saved it again with a different name. And it worked fine in Archicad. I tried doing the same for another image which I could not use for material.... but saved it with its old name... it didn't work. Changed it's name - and it worked...... totally insane...
