Roof Framing

Hi all,

I was just wondering how everyone handles raftered roof frames. I tried the roof wizard but when the roof contains a dormer AC places framing that literally can't be built. I'm about to start creating modules piece by piece for the most common house/dormer roof combos that we use. This could take a while so I was hoping that there was something that I missing that would expedite this process.

Hello Doug,
Are you referring to the elevated dormer valley rafter ?
Are your regular valley rafters at cross gables correct ?
The reason I ask is, I think there is a setting that controls this,
as there is for ridge boards.

Hi Peter,

I'm not sure what you mean by elevated dormer rafter. I created 3 separate roofs. With the roof tool active I ctrl clicked the dormer roofs to the main(house) roof. I then cut the house roof where the dormer is. Then I used the roof wizard to create the rafters for the house roof and finally the rafters tor the dormer roofs. I also have a trial version of AC11 and it does the same thing.

Hello Doug,
I was referring to the diagonal valley rafter that the dormer jack rafters
are attached to. The only thing I see wrong with the roof framing is
that this diagonal valley rafter does not lay in the plane of the main
roof rafters or the the plane of the dormer roof rafters unlike the
the main ridge board which is shown correctly.
Just to to be clear, could you tell me what, specifically, you see
that is wrong with the framing. We are probably are talking about
the same thing but I would like to be sure.
Thanks,
Peter Devlin

Doug-

Are you saying this can't be built, as in the way you want to build it? If you're preference is to "California frame" the dormer, where the rafter tails and ridge of the dormer land on the main roof plane [sheathing], as is sometimes the simplest way to frame a dormer, when I represent this I usually do a solid op, or a roof trim to the bottoms of the dormer rafters.

If I'm off base, I'm missing something. Dunno ........I could, and have framed dormers similar to what I see in your screen shot........

Hi guys, sorry I haven't gotten back sooner. Each side of the dormer sits on triple rafters. This is because it's wide open below it. I left the dormer walls out of this picture. The main roof needs to be headed off to carry the diagonal headers below. The plates that the jack rafters are sitting on is actually sitting on the roof sheathing. I left the sheathing out for viewing. The angled headers, upper headers and plates are made using the roof tool. The angled cut at the bottoms of the jack rafters are seo'd to another roof that is on an off layer because the cut is longer than the 2x10 they sit on. With these items all saved to my standard template I can change pitch, dormer height and width etc. I'll probably set up a few of the most common ones to have on hand. Doug
