Ruled Shell surface

So I'm trying to work with shells to attempt to accomplish something similar to a "Loft" command in other softwares (if there is a way to achieve loft please let me know). I'm following the steps of this tutorial :

In this tutorial he uses the magic wand selection in order to pick the first contour curve. But as far as I can tell, you aren't able to pick the second profile curve. It seems like you have to draw the second curve. My main question is: are you able to create a ruled shell by selecting two pre-existing curves as the profiles, or can you only pick the first one? Thanks!
