Is there any way to create an empty opening (no door) that has the same trim (casing) as a door?

yes - use a simple door - either D1 wood or metal - and turn the leaf off in the settings, make the frame non-existent, etc . . . and then turn on trims.

OK
tried this, but no joy. i set panel thickness to zero (there is no on/off button for the door panel) and door still appears as a single line plane. any additional input would help.
Thx

disregard previous message - solution is to select "empty" for panel type.
