If I understand correctly for a Fill to show as a Material you also need to create a new material for it and apply the fill as a "Vectorial Hatch". In addition if you want the fill to be shown in the 3D Window you need to create a texture/bitmap/rasterize for the fill. The easiest way is to save-as the base element of the fill as a jpeg. Alternative is to save it as a PDF open it in Photoshop and edit and convert it to a jpeg there since you will be able to tweak it more.
