About Archicad's design tools, element connections, modeling concepts, etc.

Whats up, fairly new ArchiCAD user here...

Just thought id say hello... I just found the board today...

I got out of school for Architecture last year from the University at Buffalo, and i just took a job in Southampton with a firm using ArchiCAD.

Fun stuff so far, thus far i havnt gotten in to tremendous detail with it (only using it for the last two weeks...) but im rendering a few walk through movies of a Cabaret Theater with a balcony...

I did a lot of Modeling with AutoCAD (ADT, i guess), and Vectorworks, and got some time in with Catia for awhile with Gehry Technologies, which was a trip.

The comparisons are interesting, to say the least... But im rambling...

Just thought id say hello, im lookin forward to pickin up some useful info here.

OK, I always wanted to know: What's Catia like??

Has pros and cons, but on the whole... Its absolutely badass. Pros:

Models ANYTHING, NURBS, free forms, and its very intuitive about using those forms to put things together... Cicle first floor, Rectangle top floor... And itll build the shell around them, and intersect it at every 10 ft for you, or whatever.

It also parameterizes everything based on how you built it... If a *wall* wasnt told to me ten ft long, but was told to run till it interesected something (like the free form shell), then modifying the free form shell also modifies your wall.

Its awesome for modeling stuff that morphs as it grows, and the like.

The downside to all that, its an organizational nightmare. Not that its done poorly, its just extremely finicky to use. If you establish items, just to base part of your model off of, and then you delete them, it gets PISSED (parameters and such).

It does that if you midify something that makes something you based off of it impossible, too.

Its amazing how it updates/references files, but it makes saving stuff a royal PITA.

All in all, i think it has the most potential of anything ive used before, but its also the most difficult and time consuming to work with.

I dont know if this is everywhere, but ours also had NO libraries with it... So we spent a lot of time modeling toilets, sinks, etc. etc...

Wow though, get a copy... its a blast to play with..
