I'm with Ben. I barely ever use the Arrow Tool. I just use its Info Box to control how my selection windows and marquee work.
Once in a while I need some weird polygon selection box and I'll use it, but that's about it.

Using the shift method: Hold down shift, click on shared edge, slab is selected. This is where the problem occurs. I thought that to cycle through available selections you held down shift + ctrl, but it doesn't seem to make a difference, I can't select the wall unless the wall tool is selected in the toolbar...
