changing wall reference line without losing position

Is there a quick way to change the wall setout reference lines (i.e. inner, outer or middle) without losing the wall position. This is similar to how column anchor point can be changed without changing the column position.

For example I often find that a project starts with the external reference line being the controlling line. As the project progresses and wall thickness & finishes change, its the inner reference line which needs to be fixed. This results in one having to manually move the wall to its original position. It's not a major issue and not something I require often.

Sure can
MENU:edit>>modify wall>>reference line will move the line with out moving the wall.

And if you can not find the "Modify Wall" commands check this out

This is one of the reasons I have standardized (with some exceptions) on putting the reference lines on the inner face of exterior walls, even in early stages. It saves the hassle of switching wall composites and materials in this case, and makes wall clean ups generally easier.

In any case, the Modify Wall function is hugely useful. It would be nice if it could also move/offset the walls, but doing it manually isn't to bad now that walls can behave like a polyline.

Interesting. I've never had to lock the location (ref line loc) of the inner surface of exterior walls. (I'll lock the inner surface of walls that are at code-defined minimum distances from each other.) I rarely deviate from having the reference line on the exterior core skin because I treat the reference line as a a structural face that typically aligns with foundation/beams/etc below. All foundation work is also done with composites. If the structure of any element changes, then the composites are redefined and the structural alignment is usually still correct. Log homes are another story, where center reference lines are useful.

Another case for keeping ref lines on the exterior face is minimum setback requirements. With the ref on the exterior, any 'growth' of the wall structure will maintain the setback. Were the ref line on the inside, structure modification would change the footprint/setbacks of the structure.

Modify Wall is an essential tool in any case. 😉

Thanks a lot.
Exactly what I was looking for & more.

It's times like these when you want to kick yourself for not having familiarised yourself with all AC's features.
