? ? you can make a dormer any size you want.

thanks for your response..what i meant is to what extent it will be considered as 'engineered' ?
Adding a dormer will always require some level of engineering. How much will depend on what size and shape you make it. A typical complication is the foundation. Adding a dormer to an attic space sometimes adds a second floor. Now you have two stories wich complicates things sometimes if your stem walls and footings are only adequate for a single story building. This is not to hard to deal with unless you have a basement too.

Step1: Get rid of the Dormer Object.
It really isn’t that useful. Draw your own walls and roofs so you can add any kind of windows you want. If your house was built in the 30s’ chances are your ridge board is only a 1x so you won’t be able to transfer any loads to it.

Hey….Are you an interior designer? I think there may be laws against aiding and abetting interior designers with structural questions. You may even have your dongle removed if anyone finds out you are trying to make working drawings.

no threat, your "dongle" is the sofware protection key you plug int to access your ArhiCAD program. I was just tyring to poking a little fun at some stereo-typical attitudes you may be familiar with.

Anyway, try cutting a hole in the roof around the chimney to get the lines to show up better in 3D.
