I'm trying to rotate an item along the Z plane and cannot figure out how to do so. I'm tried picking the plane and changing it to vertical and that didn't work. Can someone please adivse?

First what item are you trying to rotate? (wall, slab, shell, object).
Second what version of Archicad are you using (best to add to the signature in your user profile so it appears in all posts).

Only Archicad 15 has an editing plane (so I assume you are on 15) and then only shells have the ability to free rotate in any direction.
Other elements can only be rotated in plan unless you save them as objects and either amend the script to allow for rotation in the direction you want or use the rotator object that can be found in the depository at the bottom of this forum.

I'm developing some gdl objects, one of them "Objecto rotación" allow rotate any object in any direction, and graphically, in plane, 3d or section.
It's floor cut plane sensitive so you can use this for slab, beam... and in plane view its appears correctly. You can view a little tutorial of this tool here:
