Using the arrow tool and drawing a rubber band selection over a wall wont select the wall. Is this a new feature?
for what it's worth, since mr murray enlightened me some weeks ago, i am using surface highlighting only. contours off and that ugly, awful pre-selection revit-rip-off gimmick is most certainly OFF and will never, ever, ever be switched on.
by the way - i reported it as a bug during beta as well: the linear selection dots did much more than give an indication that an element was selected. why couldn't they just highlight the contours

OK I have worked out what is happening.
The wall is set to Automatic storey setting view. Selection only occurs on the "home" Storey.

On a lighter note (
)...
Is your rubber band dashed or solid? As you probably know dashed is the Partial Elements method, meaning you only need to cross over part of the element to select it, and solid is the Entire Element method, meaning you must encompass the entire element to select it.
But I would guess the problem would be with your cut plane. For example, if you have a view on an upper story that has it's relative floor plan range set to look down to one story below, and there is a wall on that story below, then it will appear in the upper view, but you will not be able to select it.
I guess it's like looking through a glass floor!
Cheers,
Link.

Dotted or dashed still doesnt help when on the wrong storey. I think it is time to bring back an indication which is the home storey for an element.
Cheers John

I think it is time to bring back an indication which is the home storey for an element.Yes, greyed out selection dots with their usual pop-up warnings would be the obvious choice wouldn't it? I'm surprised GS didn't implement this familar system for multi-story elements.
