You'll have to check with Graphisoft for the latest info, but last I heard the student version is $99US. The main limitation (AFAIK) is that the files are not interoperable with the Professional version.

I am a third year student at Kansas State University. Is there a student discount for ArchiCAD?

Student Version limitations
1. not compatible with professional
2. cannot export to dwg (AutCAD) though it imports files
3. Prints a "educational version" band around the border of pages in AC and PM
Everything else works the same. Plugins (eg Sketch-up) work fine in AC Student, and if your School have a University licence you can bypass all of the above problems except that the file will not be compatible with AC Pro
Reason I know this is because I teach AC so I have to help my students with the program.

In other words, you paid X amount and got a certain number of hours of permitted use. When the time is up, the program stops working unless you buy more time.

For my money, and dealing with the learning curve, and being a slow worker anyways, I didn't want to risk the program quitting right in the middle of a project, which with my luck, would have undoubtedly happened the night before something was due <g>. I also had hoped to start building a lot of custom library parts and didn't want that work to go out the window after I graduated. Thus, I bit the bullet and bought the commercial version from the start.
Poke around on the Graphisoft website and you'll find the information on whatever the current student pricing policies are.

Student was always different.
