using center node as reference

I will try to explain this...
before either upgrading Mac os or AC 18, I could drag along an axis and reference the center node of a wall or line that the new element does not touch, but, lately I have to hover over the existing element and get the node or special snap point to appear and only then can I use that point or node/special snap point to stop the other element on the referenced node. If anyone understands what I am trying to explain, what has changed and why?

Imac,10.10.1, AC 18

Thanks

I don't know why this changed but I noticed that it changed several versions ago. Basically now the cursor is locked to that angle and cannot sense a node or edge that is not along that angle. So if you are pressing SHIFT you have to release it, get the snap point on the middle of the Wall, then press SHIFT again to lock the angle and click the middle point before the snap point disappears.
If the angle is locked you have to press ALT+A to unlock it.

Make a wish in the wish forum, I would vote it "essential".
