Independent Worksheets are good for storing 2D reference items (like .DWGs and .PDFs) that you are not going to use for documentation (Marker references). Worksheets are just another "workspace" for 2D information.

You have your Trace Reference "On" and set to your Worksheet.

sorry i meant 'NOT' showing on my model plan. i have read the manual over and over and still don't get it!
what i am trying to do or understand from the manual is you can have the xref on the independent worksheet next to the model plan so i can refer to as i work on the model plan.
the trace icon is 'on'. i'm in model plan. i select the independent worksheet [where my xref dwg plan] on my navigational panel and then what ?

this may sound 'stupid' on my part but i just need some more simplification in doing just that step.

sorry i am frustrated !

The easiest way to set any viewpoint/view/layout as Trace/Reference is to right click it in the navigator and chose "Show as Trace Reference". The Trace/Reference palette also retains the last 5 reference views in the popup list.

And, after you have shown some as Trace Reference, make sure to zoom to show all.
Sometimes the Reference appear far from the building and you have to use the Drag Reference command to place it in its correct position.

Did you check the visibilities sliders?
It happened to me.

Just a guess.
