Duplicate layer ?

Hi everybody!


just a simple question :


is it possible to duplicate layer?

EX : i've got a layer named A, i would like to duplicate the layer A and create layer A copy with the same objets ant cotations.

I don't want to select all the objets, copy them to the archicad layer, create another layer and then move all the objets to the new layer, it doesn't work with cotations.

....I would find the way to click and choose "duplicate layer" like photoshop or autocad.

You can't create a duplicate layer that will automatically copy all of the information on that layer. But you can create the Layer first and then select everything you want to copy on the first layer and paste it into the new layer. Just one extra step. It should copy everything.

ok, thank you for the answer but i would like to duplicate, i m working on a complexe projectg that needs this.

Make a layercombination for only that layer, publish the entire model as module with that layercombination, place that module on your duplicate layer.

You can break the module after that, or keep it linked.

Actually, don't break the module, that would put it on the original layer again.

The problem with the module is that you Dims and Tex twill not change Layer in different floor plans or sections and elevations unless you take also elevation and section markers.

If the module works then you can change the Layer Name for the object the module (either/before or after placing) and then all of the items will change when you explode it.

You could also use the Module ID to hide the different options.

Yes, to hide the module, you need to hide it's master layer. It doesn't offer as much control (you can't show the module only).

To be honest, for the long term I would apporach this modelling dillema in a different way, it's not a very productive method.

You could of course save file under new name, make a new layer, delete old layer, move everything to new layer and merge both files.

It's all a bit slow and tedious.

If you have repeating items, hotlinked modules is the effective way to handle them, or in some rare cases saving the whole ensemble as a new object.

If this is all about dimensions, then there is no quick way to move them in bulk from one layer to another. I can't say I've ever needed to do this, though.

Agree with Erwin that this approach is not the correct way and not knowing the particulars it is difficult to propose and alternative. "M" looks like you will need to spend some time reorganizing the project.

The Module workflow is:

• Room Module goes into
• Floor Module which goes into
• Project PLN

And let's not forget proper layer management and usage

Everything in a logical place and having a proper diverse set of layers for building elements, furniture, etc, makes copying items a breeze.

I would say most countries have a logical system of numbered layers based on phases of construction, element types etc.
