BIM server hardware cost

g'day,

the other day we looked into hardware alternatives to the current apple line up, of which we have used mac mini's as designated bim servers so far.

surprisingly we found that the mac mini seems to be a real steal, compared to equivalent workstations and especially servers by both dell and hp - servers are almost double in price, due to MS SBS pricing...

given that we are successfully operating a couple of mac mini based bimservers, we are wondering if we are missing something here or if other users can confirm these findings.

I paid around 1200 for an entry level server tuning win sbs 2003 way back when. I must say it is extraordinarily reliable until you change a setting and then all hell breaks loose. Before breaking out a sweat and changing everything to mac, I considered upgrading the software only.... but then I heard how loud and compact a Mac mini server was, and the price.... and simplicity... ultimately my decision was easy. I can still turn the old server on but it makes such a racket. Anyway, it's there if I need it. The Bim Server will still run on sbs 2003, so it's a spare brick. I think the Mac mini with osx 10.7 server is very economical unless you have an old server hanging around with a bit of ram. Obsolete technology is a perfect candidate really.
