upgrading from v11 to v15

howdy

we are looking to upgrade from v11 to v15

one of the main reasons is that we are working more and more on teamwork files... which have recently started to have issues (crashing... random log-outs... datas missing from layouts etc)

i was hoping that the BIM server... or at least TW2 would alleviate these issues (i assume you can still work in TW in much the same way as we do now... or is it BIM server or nothing?)

from a few of the comments i have read here... it appears that the BIM server is not all it is cracked up to be

am i jumping out of the frying pan into the fire?

any insights greatly appreciated

thanks in advance

If the basic question is "we use Teamwork 1, should we switch to Teamwork 2?"

There's a simple answer.

YES. make the switch as soon as you can. You will be happy.

I used TW1 on and off for years and have now been doing projects with TW2 for the last 6 months. Compared to the struggles of dealing with the old teamwork, TW2 is a breeze.

Agree with Jared that the switch is well worth it.

Sort of. As far as 'much the same as now', if you mean just working within your office and possibly taking a project away on a laptop and coming back to send/receive - then yes, you can still work that way. It DOES require installing and using the BIM Server, but installing BIM Server for an in-house only network requires almost no thought. Things only get complicated when trying to access the server remotely (over the internet) which is a functionality that you don't have at present anyway with TW1 - so if you're happy with your current workflow, then setup for 15/TW2 is pretty easy.

If you have less than a handful of users, and one machine is quite a bit more powerful than the others - ample memory, disk, processor cores - and you have a good back-up strategy - then that machine can be used both as a workstation and running the BIM Server software.

thanks for you prompt replies

sounds like it is worth switching

is it easy enough to migrate v11 files or is it best to only start new projects in v15

also

we are thinking of moving away from individual dongles to a network key.... any issues with the server key we should be aware of

thanks again

Migration is easy, but you might want to review the pages in the Help file:

http://www.graphisoft.com/ftp/publishing/ac15_help_INT/Files/wwhelp/wwhimpl/js/html/wwhelp.htm

Attached screenshot to show where to click to get the 11 migration info.

Network key vs individual keys: depends on if you or anyone in the office ever needs to take a key home or on the road... You'll get all kinds of opinions on this one.

Karl
