3D Window Behavior erratic

I admit to being tired of saying, " In AC 9..." But

In AC 9 and prior, when in the 3d window and you zoom, your camera hgt and target hgt remained the same. (5'-6" did not become 11', unless you told it to.) Now, with the improved AC 10, both zooms and fit to window commands change where you are standing, even from a saved camera.

I'm finding it difficult to compose a view, since the camera is so unpredictable. Is there a Classic Camera Action button somewhere, like the Classic 3d Navigation?

Am I the only one troubled by this?

I love this new functionality. I love the fact that if we pan or zoom in the 3D Window it is actually changing the viewpoint now. "In AC9..." it used to just be a temporary shift inside the viewpoint. This new AC10 method makes much more sense IMHO and is much easier to save 3D views accurately.

The best way, I see, to achieve what you want is to use the Explore Model function and make sure Fly is not activated. That is, hit the F key until you see the F:Fly button at the bottom of your 3D window unindent. Now the camera height is locked.

You can also use the Navigator Preview to do the same thing, but as we know sometimes it can be a little hard to see what's going on in there if you have a big model or site.

i actually like that view is no longer internally distorted if we move around in the 3D window. i miss being able to quickly define/reset the view cone angle without dropping a camera and editing it though . . .

that being said, the camera positioning is extremely buggy and erratic when using the SHIFT modifier to temporarily active 'orbit'. it jumps around, does not orbit in the same way as when the 'orbit' button is depressed (i.e. 3D window locked into orbit mode). typically, this erratic behaviour is more evident when orbiting with selected elements and/or using zoom/pan combinations.

add to the mix a 3D window size that will happily adjust itself to some random internal logic, progress dialogues that don't appear until it's too late, the 3D/render windows not talking to each other and affecting the work environment palette positions and the extremely poor quality of the openGL rendering and i completely understand your frustration nathan! i have two sides of A4 worth of 3D window notes and gripes sitting next to me at the moment. when i get a chance to tie down some of the causes i'll be sending it to tech support.

agreed. it's the only way of smoothly lining up a view at the moment. i simply don't trust the orbit logic.

No fucking worries mate - it's what I do

I also like to push the point of using the Zoom Previous button, for when you fly off into the realms of Archispace... Good stuff.
