It is very simple to use you are basically using C4 as an extension of AC's 3D window. the procedure I use is the following:
1) create custom materials for the different objects (I use 00_mat_object ex. 00_wood_doorpanel) this avoids surprises.
2) open 3D window and do a save as. After you click save a dialog will pop up and uncheck "Export light sources" and Export Cameras" you will create them in C4. Also make sure that you select the "export by Material" option.
3) in C4 you merge the ac4d file this will create a ACobject group with all the info.
4) in C4 edit the materials that were imported from AC as long as you don't asign new mats in C4 when you do the update they will match the previous settings, one of the reasons for creating new mats in AC instead of using the predefined ones.
If you change things on the AC file you just do another save. When you use Merge in C4 then you can select the previous group object and select update from the options. If you are using geometry from different software packages you have to remember that AC exports in metric units so when you do the saveas you have to specify the geometry scaling factor (39.37).
In the following image all the chairs, tables and column trim were done in SketchUp everything else is AC.
If this sounds too complicated then I recommend giving Artlantis R a try...
