Surface Material changes not appearing in OpenGL

I'm doing a project where I want to be able to switch between actual materials and a foam core model appearance. I've done this before with no trouble, but this time something is not working.

I have my foam core materials created and I use attribute manger to overwrite the realistic materials. But when I go to the model, there is no change in the material appearances. If I change to internal engine, it's correctly all white, and if I render it's also correct. I checked the surfaces and they don't have any texture associated with them so I can;t figure out how on earth it can be displaying a texture but it is.

Maybe this is particular to v. 17? The last project I did this with was on v. 16.

Well, naturally, as soon as I post this, I stumbled on part the problem. Even thought I overwrote new materials, the textures which I thought were gone were still there.

I am still uncertain why they are not eliminated when overwriting though. In fact, I just tried switching back and forth between realistic materials and all white. The textures come back as they should when applying the realistic materials but they stay when applying the white.

When I click the overwrite button, the white materials all show up in the left hand pane with no textures indicated but when I hit apply, then modify, the texture names pop back up.

Anyone know what's up? Am I doing something wrong?
