Using the foreground options?

does any one have any examples of the foreground tools being used? and are they useful to create a certain effect? can they create better soft shadows?

Hi,

Some time ago I did a test using a little bit of yellowish fog in foreground for glare effect:

I don't think it improved the shadows' quality but made the scene moody and more interesting. Judge yourself.

I've tried using it but never liked the results.
