.ies ?

Hi.

I know I've been a ROM (Read-Only Member) for maybe too long. Recently, I've stumped in to this .ies thingy and I'm wondering if there's anyway I can use it with AC.

Do you mean the building environmental performance modelling software?

http://www.iesve.com/content/default.asp

It looks interesting, as they all do! Also see Ecotect http://www.ecotect.com/home discussed here.

But, as far as I can tell, they all suffer from the same problems.

- Too complicated - a full time job in themselves if you want to be fully competent!
- No direct communication with ArchiCAD (only thru .gbxml from http://www.greenbuildingstudio.com)
- Too easy to make a mistake and not spot it. (If you put rubbish in, you get rubbish out)
- Too expensive - IES £2500+vat / Ecotect £900+vat per licence.

However, if you mean some other 'ies', please explain futher!

I'm so sorry, I didn't make it clear.

The .ies I asked about is photometric file data (.ies = Illuminating Engineering Society .... maybe?)

In 3DS MAX, you can utilize the .ies and use it as a light source for rendering. The .ies is basically a text file with a bunch of lighting data provided by manufacture.

I'd be great if we can utilize this real world lighting data with AC.

Ahh, THAT ies!

I dont think the lights in ArchiCAD are accurate enough to subtlely capture the differences.

As Lightworks only crudely approximates lighting at best, to utilise the ies data it would be best to export the finished model to 3DS Max and render it there. I wonder if the Maxwell renderer can use the data?

Going with the whole BIM idea it would make sense if ArchiCAD was more intelligent about things like lighting levels. It is all just information.

Actually, my suggestions above about the environmental modelling software is still strangely relevant as the lighting levels in a building are one of the many things the software will calculate. It may even use the .ies data!

Thank you very much for the reply. I couldn't agree more with you there.

In Maxwell, there are options for input ( under Light properties tab - for emitter). You can choose the "Load emission data file" to use .emitt files, not .ies, if you have one. And boy oh boy, I don't even know what the .emitt file is or how to get one.

Just so you know, you can now use the new VraytoC4D bridge to use Vray renderer in C4D. It will also read ies files. (C4D R10.+ only )

Thanks for the info, Wokka.

Indigo is also now support .ies. I plan to play around with Indigo (via Blender) which is now support .ies but not until next year though, too many places to get away from work
