I created a roof in 2D and can't see it in 3D view

I am quite literally going insane. If I create the roof in 2D I can't see it in 3D, if I create it in 3D I can see it in both 2D and 3D. But I would like to create it in the 2D view !!!! I can select the roof in 2D and it will show it in 3D isolated ...
