Dimensions visible on all stories?

I think I already know the answer to this one, but still I ask: Is there any way to make dimension strings visible on all stories (i.e. structural grid dimensions)?

Short of making them static dimensions and cutting/pasting to all stories, does anyone have a practical work around???

Yes - the new Grid Tool can do it, but only in ArchiCAD 10.

It's a'goody', so you'll need to download it from the web. You can do this inside AC10 - go to Help > ArchiCAD 10 Goodies which will take you to the website and you can download the appropraite version. It comes with instructions, although others are having a little trouble nutting it out.

This will definitely show the grid on all stories, the dimensions are 'semi-automatic'. Maybe time to upgrade hey?

Just received our AC10 after my post.

I know about the improvements to the structural grid tool -- I'll have to play with it a bit to see if associated dimensions are affected...

Well, you can add dimensions strings to a placed grid in additional stories by selecting the grid, Design > Grid System > Grid Systems Settings... and checking the "Dimension lines" box. But you do have to do this for each story independently; likewise, if the grid changes, you will need to delete the placed dimension strings and re-place them to each story -- not the same as having a single dimension string visible on all stories (nor one that is associated with (and changes with) the grid for that matter)...

The dimensions should definitely be associated to the Grid, but it looks like it may be time for some wishing. Given that this is a goody it is not offically supported by Graphisoft, but if there's enough public interest (and it's starting to look that way) they may improve it. Heck they may even include it in the program.

I have been playing with this grid for a long time now and there are a few issues:

- the dims have to be manually inserted on non resident stories
- the line type of the grids changes in the S/E
- the markers of the S/E are too low in S/E
- editing a placed grid results in deformed grid with markers flying away, so delete, redefine and place again (of course, dimension again)
- if shown in 3D, the numbers on the markers are rotated and don't match the rotation on the plan
- the dims go to the current dimensioning layer instead of the default grid layer (you might want to turn that particular layer off, unlike the grid layer ...)
- the settings box does not fit the screen, but is maximized each time you open it

Hmmm ... 75% achieved. Was the goal not 80%?

What a list we could make of things which work - just. Sometimes it is better to not be teased with these improvements
