Layers, Stories and View Sets

Hello from a newbie. I'm new to these forums and also fairly new to ArchiCAD. While I am a quick learner (or at least I like to think so) and I'm catching on quick, there is one part that I am having a heck of time 'getting'.

Layers, Layer Combinations, Stories and View Sets. (and the relationship amongst them)

I searched these forums and did a bit of reading, but what I am really looking for is a comprehensive look at how the three work together. A step by step would be great in setting up a basic one, because I can build easily on that.

I know how layers interact with Stories and I am working on a decent template that I can use effectively, I also studied ArchiCADs template but that is well beyond what I am going to be needing.

The thing that I just can't get my head around is the view sets. I want to be able to set up multiple drawings of my main floor plan, with different information (ie. door/window markers on and off) so that the whole thing can be imported into plotmaker for ease of plotting. But when I try and do that, I end of saving my drawing with the wrong changes and......

Well - you get the idea. Anyone got any good tutorials on layers, layer combinations, stories and view sets?

A Defined View is a single "view" of your project, which saves the working window, Layer Combination, Display Option Combination, and Scale. ( all the settings you see when in your "Project Map" view.)
Also dimensioning units, and that is a setting you can NOT see in the Project Map.

I'm working on this now.. Its slowly coming together. It just hit me this morning that the view sets show whatever is in the regular drawing. So if I move a wall in my drawing - then in all of the view sets, it will show the same wall moved. The purpose of view sets, then, is to turn off the layers (or layer combinations) that you don't want to see in a particular printed view of the plan.

ie. - For the electrical plan, I turn off all the 'extra' stuff (even though it is still there). This way, even if I have to move a wall or a door, the electrical plan will show that wall or door being moved, but will still have all the 'extra' stuff off. (ok - maybe I'm a little slow on the uptake on this one, but at least I'm getting there)

So my next question is, during initial drawings, I want to see the door and window sizes so I use the 'builder demension'. But on printing, I will have a full window and door schedule so I will only need the door/window marker.

Before I print this out, Do I have to go back and change all my doors and windows to the correct marker? I know I can do a global, but then during additional changes, It would be nice to see the actual sizes (builder demension) without having to do a global back to that - and then again back to the regular markers. Is there an easier way or am I just too lazy?

Viewsets control layer visibility, display options, scale and zooming (plus dimension settings and a variety of 3D settings for 3D views). Use different views to display each. For example use layers to control what you see and display options to determine how you see them. Display options can turn window & door markers on and off, but not change what they are.

How you working for in Rigby? I'm guessing either a Nuclear power plant or a potato farmer?

Cheers,

Link,

Thanks. That makes sense. I guess I was making it more difficult than it is (and thats not common). This will make my life much easier now if I can get it to work.

Ok, that makes sense, but why does it create all of my stories in my view sets over and over and over?

Why does G-101 Site Plan have Stories and Sections/Elevations and under those have all of my stories?

Does ArchiCAD set these up by default in an attempt to help me? Because those views I am finding useless. I'll define my own views and end up saving them what I want to name them.

Is this right?
It sounds like you are looking at the project map versus the view sets. View sets are never created automatically by Archicad. Another thing I like to do is use the title of my views to be automatically imported into the title I use in plotmaker. This fits with the essence of what a view is - a view of a specific drawing that is ultimately intended for out put.

I am using a plotmaker file that I got from a co-worker so I could use the company title block sheet. I realized yesterday that those 'extra' view sheets were probably created long before even my co-worker used it.

So, I just deleted them and continue to work on my template. I'm getting much closer now.
