Renovation Graphic Overrides

Is there a way to exclude certain things from the Renovation Graphic Overrides?  Specifically, I want to exclude the site boundaries.  

I use an object for the site boundaries so they can be displayed on all stories.  They need to show on both existing and new plans, but show grey on the new plans.

Having access to renovation graphic overrides would allow me to bypass this, but they are locked.

How do other people work around this issue?  Has it already been addressed in a post?

To answer my own question: the renovation graphic overrides can be overwritten by a user-created graphic override.  For the above, I created a rule to change my site boundaries to the correct pen.  It works fine.
