Sheet Index formatting

So... I have multiple sheets listed in our index which automatically generates. All of the sheets start with a letter associated to the type of work it represents.

ie. A-architectural, AS-architectural site work, C- civil, etc

my problem is that the sheet index automatically formats the index to list alphabetically. The problem is that our document sets do not read this way. How can I customize the sheet order?

hypothetically: I would like to make multiple sheet indexes for the various "publishing sets" I'll create... So I also need to figure out how to take out sheets when they are not included in that specifici set.

ie: index for my DD set, index for my SD set, index for my CD set, etc

I assume your letter division codes are in the layouts' IDs. In the index, you want the sort button of the ID field to be blank, as opposed to ascending or descending. This way the layouts are listed in the order of the layout book.

As for eliminating layouts from the index. There is a "Published" criterion; if it's on only the layouts in a particular publication will be listed. It's a little awkward because when you're simply viewing the index it will appear blank.

Another approach is to temporarily move subsets or layouts out of the subset to be published.

Yet another is to have separate 'top-level' subsets (and therefore layouts) for Schematics and CDs, with dedicated indexes for each.

I use the second two methods, I'm too suspicious to trust the seemingly empty index.

It would be nice to have a criterion where layouts without drawings could be skipped.

More on our implementation of drawing indexes here, FWIW.

I have had to do a little experimenting (meaning some wasted paper to see how it prints) but have managed to use the "Published" criterion successfully when plotting/printing/saving out of the publisher sets.

It does show up blank in the source view (I presume because nothing is yet defined until you actually publish something) and it shows up blank on the layout, but I just format the index withy the published criterion off to get it looking right, then go in and turn it on.

By the way, it does not want to show anything if you only print/plot/save the page on which the index appears. It seems to need two or more pages published to generate a list.

P.S. Make sure the placed drawing is set to "Auto" update in order for this to work.
