As Barry said, there's really only the 3 options Layers, Modules & Renovation Settings. Neither is a perfect solution. However, I'd like to expand on the Renovation Tool option as it can be quite powerful.
Essentially it takes advantage of the often forgotten setting 'Show on Renovation Filter...' that lives in each element's settings under 'Categories & Properties'. As it's name suggests it will only show on the selected Reno Filter.
So use the Existing, Demo, New status as normal. However set up a new filter called 'Option 1', 'Option 2' etc. Model that option and under each element's settings, change the 'Show on Renovation Filter' to the relevant Reno Filter. Now you can have plans for Existing, Demolished, Option 1, Option 2 etc just by flipping through the different Renovation Filters.
It's certainly not perfect solution, however it avoids all the issues of modules and attribute management as well as avoiding a huge bloated layer list. It really comes down to the extent of the different options and personal preference.
