what is the difference between linked and source detail markers? and when is it best to use either one? I think I've figured out that with linked markers - you can't back reference to the page the detail was on, is this true?

The Source Marker (this is also true for Section, Elevations, Interior Elevations and Worksheets, not just Details) always creates a Viewpoint in the Project Map when it is placed. However, once a Viewpoint exists (e.g. a Detail Viewpoint), you may want to have multiple Markers in various Viewpoints of your Project or various positions in the same Viewpoint all pointing to (referencing) that specific Viewpoint because they are all the same detail, for example. To solve this, a Marker can be placed as a Linked Marker, which DOES NOT create a new Viewpoint. Instead, when placing it you will have to select which existing Viewpoint it should point to (reference).
So a Linked Marker is just another reference to an already existing Viewpoint, the Source Marker always creates a new Viewpoint.
