I just installed Archicad and part of the installation was to shut all power off and then put into the USB port the key. Do I have to shut off all the power everytime before I take out the key or was that just for the installation process?

Sounds like you had some old instructions. If it is the first time you've installed AC, you do want to set the keyplug aside during installation, and then plug it in during or after a reboot (XP). There is no need to power down to insert a USB key ... these are hot-pluggable.

(The computer should be shut down any time one of the old parallel port keys is plugged in or out because of the nature of the voltages on those pins and the potential of damage to the computer. USB is quite different.)

You can plug the key in and out to your heart's content with the computer running (although doing so while AC is running is not recommended!).
