Is you AC slow to get going? Then try...

Rick Thompson

My AC was opening very quickly, once upon a time, but became very slow to the point of getting very irritating. I was thinking it was a library issue, then I remembered what I use to know.. clean up the old preferences... at least using Mac OS. Now it is back to it's refreshing opening. I'm not sure what the main culprit was, but would like to know should anyone have any idea. I suspect it was in the Work Environment, but I don't understand this stuff. I had many (40 -50) ProfileSets, maybe due to the fact AC doesn't seem to keep the settings very well. Most times I open the Work Environment it has gone to custom in most areas. I ditched all the old AC11 preferences too. The spinning beach ball was occurring after the library loaded. The time had grown to over a min, and now is back to 15 sec. or so. While this shouldn't happen (bug to me), it does.

So, I suspect I am not the only person this happens to, and I wonder how many people just live with it.

(ps.. to those who do beta, those preferences had already been trashed and I was having this problem).

All this aside, if that was not causing the slow start ups, I wonder what I deleted that fixed it?

Well, maybe it was part of the cause? Ralph, with his gazillion files would best be able to tell us by timing before and after deleting them. When a new file is created at startup, ArchiCAD must be checking all existing files in that folder to make sure that the new file name is unique, which would take a little time, but I wouldn't think it would be dramatic.

Dunno.

PS Vistasp: I don't have a Windows machine awake right now, but you could check in Documents and Settings\username\ and look down into Application Data subfolders or Local Data subfolders to find where the WE stuff is saved on Windows....might have the same problem?

Hi Karl,

I'm still on AC10 which has no such problem. I asked only because I've been contemplating an upgrade. So far the sheer number of bugs that you guys have found, has discouraged me from taking the plunge.

The same thing happens on Windows XP SP2 (C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Graphisoft\ArchiCAD 12.0.0 INT R1\WorkEnvironment\). I've deleted those files (there where around 130 of them), but I can't say that AC12 starts faster now. So maybe the problem lies somewhere else?

This is barely a bug, and one that does not affect ArchiCAD's operation. The new features and speed increase in 12 are worth the upgrade, all the versions have some bugs, but for me 12 has no bugs that make me wish to use any earlier version.

Thanks David, that's encouraging. You're right that this doesn't affect AC's operation but what I'm more concerned about, are the bugs in library parts. Does anyone have a clue when they'll be (mostly) fixed?

There was 362 "profile set.....xml"s (I shut my machine off regularly).
I had been having long waits on shut down, not start up.
Since I just deleted the profiles sets listed above, AC shuts down instantly,
at least on the two tests I just did.
Or maybe it's something else I'm not aware of that sped up the shut down?
However, maybe after a longer session, long shut down times could be back?
I'll re-post if that is the case.
Fwiw; In a sub folder of WorkEnvironment "UserPreferences" I only have the three preferences I set up.

This is completely consistent with my experience. Shutdowns were taking a long time (even when performed without a save). Deleting the 315 WE ProfileSetxxxxx.xml files I had accumulated returned my shutdowns to instantaneous.

Sounds like a bug to me. Thanks for the tip-off.

This feels like something that should now get a thread all its own.

For vista users the path is:

C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Graphisoft\ArchiCAD 12.0.0 INT R1\WorkEnvironment

After deleting these files:
1. AC starts up faster
2. Project file load time is the same (about 16M - solo project)
3. Saving project time is same
4. Closing AC is significantly faster.
