New Computers for office: Mac or PC

Its a simple question: Mac or PC.

Our PCs are 4 years old(or more). Have windows 7 on some machines (BIM server), but have had performance problems on the work stations (crashes).

Anyone running a multi-platform office?

Any really big disadvantages to that?

Thanks.

In my experience the more Macs the fewer problems.

The only significant dual platform issue that I am aware of is loading libraries from the server. Mac and Windows see the path names differently so if you open a project on one platform that was last run on the other you will need to repath any libraries that are not in the local program folder. AFAIK this is not a problem with teamworked files.

This may not specifically answer your question but GS US had a webinar recently where they talked about hardware suggestions for ArchiCAD/BIM Server machines:

Hello,

ArchiCAD saves the used linked file paths with the protocol and
it becomes a problem in a Mac/Win office if connections
are made with AFP and SMB.

If both of these are used you will be having a situation
where ArchiCAD tries to connect the same file with
two different protocols simultaneously and saving etc.
is impossible because the file is already in use (by itself !).

I recommend that you only have one protocol open
and stick to that with all workstations in all situations.

HTH.

we have both Mac & PC in our office. My advice would be go and buy 27" imacs. They aren't badly priced and run ArchiCAD beautifully. If you have a bit of spare cash they also make a 4-core one.

As for compatibility issues, we share the same server for PC & mac and don't run into any issues.
