Windows XP Home

Hello

This is my first visit to the Forum and I appreciate the opportunity to tap into all that know-how that everybody except me seems to have. I have just ordered AC9 and intend to use it with XP Home, Service Pack 2. Has anybody experienced any problems with this combination, or any tips? I've been using 8.1 with no problems.

Many, many thanks

I have a client who has XP Home SP2 on both of his computers and is running 9 without problems.

Thanks, Karl. That's very reassuring.

No problems here.

On the other hand, SP2 (on a media center XP machine, and an XP Home) slowed 3D and especially 3D OpenGL performance to such a crawl that I was forced to do a system restore to pre-SP2 settings on both machines. (pIIII @3+ Mhz, 1GB Ram)

Be sure to benchmark 3D performance before and after. I don't actually know what security features SP2 offers anyways, as we use mozilla/netscape browsers since that glitch was discovered in IE.

Huh. I've seen no noticeable change in 3D performance on SP2 machines. Do you have the most current display drivers?

SP2 has a lot of security features beyond patches to IE. There is a more powerful and configurable firewall, and additional security in Outlook Express.

I did a test. My machine is TOSHIBA Satellite 2410 notebook, with 256M RAM and nVidia Geforce 4 420 Go! display card.

In 2D Window, AC runs correctly. But in 3D window with OpenGL, things' wrong. The 3D window is empty. It looks like the whole 3D window is filled by white color.

I run AC v9 INT in DEMO mode, because they will send my AC next year.

Karl, right. After I downloaded the latest NVidia drivers, SP2 wasn't as problemmatic, but the other MediaXP is a brand spanking new machine - I just didn't want to take the time to troubleshoot yet, as the 3D slowdown was significant.

I was also having that problem described on my laptop, the 3D window would display white at times (even after rebuilding 'ctrl-shft-R') - or would downright crash immediately with no bug report.

Later however, the problem 'fixed itself'. I am still wary of SP2, but may give in on the weekend.

Hmmm ... Media Center XP is a special multimedia version of XP; I am still old fashioned enough to think that a CAD machine should be as clear of any frills and thrills as possible. Take a luxury and a racing car - no padding, AC, or even extra seats in the second one. AFAIK the MM version is reserving quite a bit of resources for movies and music, as that is the intended purpose.

So see the barebones XP machine; I am running XP Home at home, SP2, and no problems.
