Thanks for the reply. Changed the subtype, but still know 2d view.
I opened the object on another computer and the 2d view will come up.
It seems that I have closed the 2d window somehow on my computer.
Anyone have any idea how to reopen it?

Try a 'New & Reset'. That might clear out the cobwebs. To do this, hold down the alt/opt key while you open a new file.
