Custom Door Leaf - File location & Customized Surfaces

When making custom door leafs for a project, I have two questions:
1) Do you have a process for saving the 3d door leaf components within the job file in a way that they don't interfere with the rest of the model (i.e. separate layer)? Or do you save them in an outside file?
2) Is there a way to change the surfaces of a custom door leaf within the actual door settings, or does a new custom leaf need to be made for every color change?
1) I save door leafs and other custom items on a hidden layer off to the side in the job file.
2) I have not found a way of changing surfaces for custom leafs without resaving the door leaf. But if you have the original geometry, it is only a few steps to change the surface and resave.
