Delete unnecessary hotspot in 3d

Anonymous
Not applicable
Hi all,

I'm creating objects by using ArchiCAD tools, I can create the shape but there's many unnecessary hotspots when I select object. I don't know how to delete / hide them ?

Thank you so much Roberto
I will have to try this again until I get it right.

To get rid of this whole problem from the beginning, the solution is very simple. All you need is to add the Hotspots to the selection, when you are ready to Save as Object.
I suggest to save the elements from the Plan view, to get a scripted symbol, otherwise you will get a drawn symbol, without fills. And without hotspots.
For the 2D it is so simple, while for the 3D we don't have the right tool.
So I've made a 3D Hotspot object. Use it to add grip points to the ArchiCAD elements before saving them as an object. After selecting all of them, open the Object setting dialog and deselect the "Show lines" parameter, so you don't get them in the final object.

This discussion inspired me to create a new 30 minute video tutorial, which I have just posted on my ArchiCAD Tutorials YouTube Channel:

ArchiCAD Tutorial | How to Create a New 3D Object with Custom Hotspots and 2D Symbol

In this ArchiCAD tutorial I explain how to create a custom 3D object from elements in your model, complete with custom hotspots on plan as well as in 3D. I used a special 3D Hotspot object (one that I had scripted prior to Roberto's posting, but essentially the same idea) to set the snappable points in the 3D model.

In the video I also show how to easily redraft the 2D symbol (which is normally scripted in GDL by ArchiCAD) to simplify it. This is often a confusing area for new and intermediate level users, since it is easy to create a custom 3D object but it's not obvious how to change the 2D symbol if it doesn't look the way you need.

I also show how to add in an opaque fill to cover up items below the object. I've had this question come up many times over the years. Users often want their new object to work in a way similar to standard library parts, which cover up floor tiles or other elements placed behind them in the Display Order.

I take a few minutes in this tutorial to demonstrate that old favorite technique (no longer as widely used or needed, but still useful) of rotating the viewing position to a side elevation to create a custom object with a different axis orientation. As many of you know, this can help simplify the creation of certain forms, since it is sometimes easier to draft something precisely on plan then flip it up to a vertical orientation.

Thank you so much Roberto & Eric for your Gr8! help in making this a simpler process for all of us.
I have learned a great deal from this adventure and even have some ready tools from both your generosity & expertise.
Now I am sure with excitement that I will come across more things to jolt my learning of GDL. Just what I need.
Thanks again & regards

Me too.
This 3D Hotspot object is very smart and useful indeed.

And, thought you need it in the loaded libraries along with all your custom objects that will use it, I think this is an object that would be better to find in the standard (Graphisoft) library. Like the "Resize_A_B_ZZYZX" macro.

I agree, I will suggest this to the GS GDL guys.

Awesome objects, tutorials, & tips everyone! AND great video Eric!

For the creators of the 3D hot spot objects, can you all upload them to BIMcompentents.com and then add a link back to this thread and/or Eric's video?

Learned so much tonight. Jared

Jared -

Thank you for your enthusiastic comments! I have uploaded my "Hotspot Placement Tool" to BIMcomponents.com with a description that links back to both my video tutorial and this discussion on ArchiCAD-Talk.

I tried to search for the object but couldn't find it - perhaps it needs to be approved by GS before it can be seen in the portal.

Yes, after an Object is uploaded to BIMcomponents.com, there is a validation process performed so it may take some time before you will actually see the Object on the site.
