Library Cache Error

Anonymous
Not applicable
Haven't seen any posts on this in recent years...

I have a large project which uses both the 10 library and the 9 library. It opens fine, works great (although it does show the Library 9 folder AND the AC9.pla both loaded--see screenshot) until I try to open it on another computer in my office.

The pln is on the server, the librarie are on each workstation and are all exatly the same, in the same folders relative to each other except AC 9 is not installed on the other computer.

Any ideas?

There's the problem right there.

This isn't really a cache problem AFAICS, ArchiCAD will simply look at the library path. If it doesn't exist (as is the case on your non-AC9 computer) it will show as unavailable.

You either need to load AC9 on the other computer, which will install the library in a location matching your first computer, or load the AC9 library from the server. Maybe trial the latter method first and test for speed, which will determine if the former method is worth pursuing.

With all due respect, by the look of your screenshot, it looks like your library management could be cleaned up. Think about having three main libraries: The ArchiCAD Library(s), an Office Library, A Project Specific Library. Loading objects individually is not a good method IMHO.

Thanks for the reply, Link.

I thought the AC9 might be the problem. I'll try it from the server. This is the only project left from our switch to 10 a few years back and I haven't had the heart to go in and change the hundreds of 9 items to 10. I just might have to if that doesn't work.

Those other objects you see are the job specific library items which are stored on the server with the project. That's the way they always load. They're kept in a folder which is with the pln or plp. Is there some other method which would be better/faster?

Thanks,

Well I certainly wouldn't think you'll need to change hundreds of parts!

Another method? Well a library can simply be a folder with objects in it. So I would suggest creating a Project Library folder, with subfolders like Objects, Doors, Windows, Textures, etc and place the relevant items inside each one. Then you simply need to load that one Project Library for that project.

That scenario is for items that are specific to each project, hence the name. You can do the same with (non AC-Library) items that you use on all projects, and put them into an Office Library. Then you can also load your AC Library - that makes 3 libraries. This is a common and simple method - a solid basic approach.
