Thanks, Barry. That doesn't seem to be it. Tab bar is already show, and I have several tabs open with sections, details, etc. The problem is just how AC decides to show newly requested 3d view - window or tab.

Is the 3D Window maximized? When you maximize it, it should be part of the Tab bar.

On Mac, if a window is undocked, and closed, reopening will remember it was undocked and open a separate window again. To re-dock, go to Window menu, and choose "Dock Window 3D/All".
If you've docked it, then closed the tab, and it keeps re-opening as undocked, then it may be some corrupt preferences.
