Is it possible to assign building materials to an object so that the object is considered in priority based connections?

The GDL manual is a bit vague between surfaces and materials...

No, because Building Materials are not implemented at the moment in GDL so it is not available for any GDL-based elements.
Hopefully this is something that GRAPHISOFT will implement in one of the future releases of the program, but as of now (AC19) it is not yet available.
