Save 3D model in AC15 vs. save selection as object in AC16

I noticed what to me is an important difference between AC15 and AC16 in saving objects as GDL. AC15 allowed 3D model to be saved with editable or non-editable options. However AC16 allows selection to be saved as an editable GDL object and does not allow for non-editable option. This results of course with all the objects being scripted and all and naturally increases their sizes a lot, thus slowing the program in case many such objects are used in SEO's. Is there a way to save objects as non-editable ones in AC16?

Thank you for your comments.
We have an existing entry about the development of this function in our database (#143140); I added your remark to it. Your ideas are appreciated.

The only reason I actually need the uneditable option is not only because it is small in size, but one can edit the 2D presentation and make it look as one desires.
You can change the 2D presentation to an editable 2D Symbol by following the method I outlined here:
2D symbol of Archibase.net objects

Sorry, but I do not have access to this database entry.

My comment was no request for a function, but a bug report: In AC16 is in "save as" dialog a button to save "binary", but it does not do so, if you select it. Delete or grey out this function or make it work. Something for a hotfix. IMHO.

Dear Frank,

The design issue in our database contains the same intention, although similar changes on the user interface can be achieved in a new release of ArchiCAD only.

Katalin, in your previous post you suggested to modify the registry key to enable the "binary" option. I tried it, but my objects are always full scripted, although the Save as binary box is checked. I think Frank is referring to this behaviour as a bug.
If this is also "by design", what is the registry key for?

Roberto,

That sounds interesting. The registry key enables the "Options" button in the Save Object dialog only, but the function should work the same way as in ArchiCAD 15. I checked the object saving in both versions, but didn't realize the difference as you did.

In case you can reproduce the issue, please forward both objects (one saved in GDL script, the other in binary format) to you your local reseller , and we will check them.
Thank you,

I have to revive the discussion ...

... as the functionality and the workflow are again destroyed by the "improvements"

The workflow I am referring to is that the whole buildings of a building complex can be required to be objects. In that case, Binary is ideal, as it is NOT NEEDED to have parameters active. The current scenario of object saving only pertains to doors, windows, their panels and handles, and furniture. It does NOT support any large scale project implementation.

Don't say Modules, that is another story altogether. They don't update, only when opening the host file (16 3872)

1. ArchiCAD 16 Build 3872

- default object saving from the 3D window results in missing parts and macros
- activating the binary save in the Registry results in the object without doors and windows

2. ArchiCAD 17 Build 4005

- default object saving from the 3D window yields exactly the same results
- there is not even a greyed out button for the Binary save

Modules? the same, only worse - they don't react to layer combos.

All in all, the functionality that WAS there is NOT THERE any more. Thanks. I am off to model an X Fighter to cool down, maybe I can submit it to the authorities and get the building permit?

I have a large object of a 15 storey shopping mall plus car parking etc but despite choosing the option to save as Binary ArchiCAD 17 doesn't.

Not only that the "Binary" version comes up with an invalid 3d script so doesn't display in 3d at all because it is looking for other Library Objects that are in a different Library which I was avoiding loading as it has a lot of stuff I don't need hence my reason for trying to create a Binary version, grrrr
