AC10 No longer biased toward selected item?

Brad Elliott

I'm trying to get productive in AC10. I still can't believe they removed all the key commands for the tools. So now I get to put them back.

Anyway, One of the good things in 8 & 9 was that when you had an object selected it was the default item to be grabbed when you went to manipulate the object. Such as my slab that is aligned under my exterior wall. Now I'm having an extremely difficult time selecting the slab without it defaulting to and selecting the wall above. Is anyone else having this problem?

This is probably it; the described happens if you are in the Arrow tool.
This seem like a bug to me. Sometimes you can get the pet palette and sometimes it changes the selection. I have a sneaky unconfirmed suspicion that it relates to being selected with the magnet. The 3D window has some strange bugs related selection with the magnet tool.

Not really.

It depends on the active tool - make it a habit to Select and activate tool, and many problems will go away.

The fact that the results are variable indicates a bug. If it works sometimes but not other this is not consistent. Most editing can be done in the arrow tool (or any other tool that you happen to be in) and this increased functionality was given to us several versions back and it should not act in this manner. There is always a way to do something, but ideally the task can be done in a number of different methods and the same result achieved. Select a slab via a node in the arrow tool and click on the edge of the slab (mercedes) and tell me why it brings up the pet palette when at other times it selects a wall at the same location.
I can't give hard data on this, but it's much bumpier than in 9. I have never used Select and Activate Tool. My habit has always been to select something and Opt-click on it: Shift-click, Opt-click, very fast. This is no longer solid in 10. But I just tried to test it and couldn't find a pattern. It's not consistent.

Throughout the beta period this area was very erratic. Nodes wouldn't be favored, the active tool wouldn't be favored, ghost story elements favored over the current story, you name it. I'm frankly not surprised it hasn't settled down completely.

If anyone detects a pattern, do drop them a line.

How many ways can you NOT say "bug?"

How did I miss this thread? This behavior is what I was referring to in the other thread. Trying hard enough... tap, tap, tapping the Tab key... I can get the work done, but frustratingly slow! I'm afraid the pattern is that there is no pattern.

Similarly, I cannot seem to select a roof and then edit the pivot line. I'll start a new thread on that (after checking for an existing one).

After tapping on the tab key to highlight the element are you then selecting the element with one click of the left mouse button before trying to edit? And, are you zoomed in close enough to make sure the mercedes curser is on the correct item? I have tried to duplicate the proposed bug described in this thread again with at least six elements stacked on each other and can't do it on my system. As long as I follow the sequence above, I get the pet pallette each time and with only the arrow tool activated. Maybe the problem is system specific.

It requires patience to master since instead of selections in sequence, the TAB key gives you a sequence of POSSIBLE selections.... that you still must pick....

You are right. In AC9 you could select with one hand.
But with time I am used to use the new selection method. Than I can select also with one hand and more precisely.
In my result the selection method in AC 10 is better than in AC9(it was also good enough.)

All of this points to the importance of using a schmillion button mouse and programing at least two of those buttons to address this issue: One to collect the attributes (the eyedropper tool) and the other to inject the attributes to another element (the syringe tool). This way you can, in many instances, select the element and activate its tool very quickly. Also very useful is programing a button to act as a Shift-click. this was way you can build up selection sets quickly and without touching the keyboard.
