ArchiCAD 23 Announcement

It's worth noting (from what I'm reading) that this free version of Twinmotion for ArchiCAD users only applies to ArchiCAD 23 (upgrades and new licenses).

From AC 24 it goes back to being a paid version for any newer versions of TM.

If I'm reading it wrong, I hope someone corrects me.

I suppose it makes some sense when you think about it.
There's obviously a mutual cross-promotional benefit for both companies doing it this way.
For Graphisoft they get to sell more ArchiCAD licenses for an otherwise lackluster version upgrade by bundling in this essentially free realtime raytracing renderer.

And on Epic's part they get to advertise and publicize their newly acquired product while getting more penetration into a market they obviously want some market presence in (AEC) and to get some more of Lumion's turf.
After a year when they release a new version which is now a paid version for everyone, they (theoretically) will also get more paying customers in the form of ArchiCAD users who've become accustomed to the workflow and the functionalities and tools.

Microsoft essentially did the same thing when they upgraded Windows from version 7 to version 10 and allowed everyone and anyone to upgrade to version 10 for free, and then after about a year or so, it went back to being a paid version upgrade.

Putting aside the list of the new features, There is something strange or , at least, unusal in the whole archicad23 announcement:

Every year the announcement took place on the 2nd may, not this year. The release was, generally, ready on June, July, now on September. … Each announcement was accompanied with a bunch of YouTube videos, not this time...The new CEO side-effect or a future release cycle ...or form?
I don’t think the macOS Catalina, is specially a reason for the delay, ArchiCAD releases took place on the same calendar before the WWDC.
It seems that no one was really ready for the release, even us. Maybe it is for the best…after all.
Now, back to work

Such a thing happened before. AC13 was released in September (BIM Server was a huge development), then from AC14 on, new versions were again released in June. Sometimes a version needs more development time to make sure that it is finished and up to the quality standards of GRAPHISOFT.
I think this is a big version in this regard. Two Tools (Column Tool, Beam Tool) have been re-engineered in a major way, plus there is a brand-new Tool (Opening Tool). These are big developments. Plus, there are many other new developments besides these.
Just by comparison, I do not remember the last time an architectural Tool was re-engineered in Revit to such a degree, or a new Tool was introduced in it. These are big development tasks.
You should not read more into it than there is in it.

Hi, Lazlo!

I was probably accustomed to the regularity of the last releases.

Ok. I saw the premiere presentation... and I'm very positively surprised. The announcement note didn't reflect the best things about the new version.

First of all tighter cooperation with McNeil and Epic (especially looking forward to being able to open the scene in UE) is very good news.

Beam and Colum redesigned is truly impressive since we will get the ability to complex profile element along its length. Ability to change parameters of complex profile in GH is also great. Also, the opening tool is a nice improvement since we had to mix GDL and empty openings in our workflow. Bimx with model streaming... finally

Seems very similar to Lumion LiveSync for ArchiCAD. ?

Well one MAJOR difference is TwinMotion runs on the Mac OS and Windows.....Luminon ONLY runs on Windows.

But before anyone gets overly excited about TwinMotion, I can tell you so far my experience with their tech support is horrible. Starting two weeks ago, after installing TwinMotion Direct Link, I would get a message within ArchiCAD after launching it that there was an update for TwinMotion Direct Link.

I downloaded the update, but simply could not get it to install on an OSX machine. I reached out to TwinMotion 3x through their tech-support portal only to receive a generic response directing me to post on their user forum, of which every question gets moderated by Epic.

So they wouldn't post my question and they wouldn't answer my direct request for help......absolutely WORTHLESS!

Fortunately, GS tech support quickly figured out the problem and helped me get the update installed.

If what I experienced trying to get with their update is how they treat customers, no thank you! I would would even consider buying a designated Windows machine just to run Lumion, which to me looks much more useful than TwinMotion.

Buyer beware, even though for not they are giving it away......until Nov.
