My composites are displaying with the air space filled like the other materials. In the composite settings, I've given no background color to the fill, yet it still is showing. Is there so way to have the airspace not filled?

have you checked that they aren't being over-ridden by the wall settings themselves?
open the wall dialogue and check that you are "using composites settings" in all of the different fill and linetype settings . . .
