Dashed Lines in Hidden Line View

Anonymous
Not applicable
Is there a way to show elements in the hidden line 3d view as dashed? We do a lot of 3d view details and would like to show some elements for reference that are not part of the detail. For instance, I am detailing a pedestal for a cabinet that the client has purchased. I would like to show the pedestal with a dashed cabinet on it.....

I thought someone else asked this recently.... maybe in the wish list?

I don't remember what the answer was, but I cannot think of a way to do it. It would be nice, though.

Yeah I would be surprised if I was the first to ask this....... I searched for a while, but had trouble coming up with a search phrase the was specific enough....... It would make a good wish list item.
Steve,

While I don't know of a way to do this as a "live" 3D view, you could create the pedestal and cabinet, but choose a cabinet material with transparency (e.g. glass). Under 3D Window Settings, make sure Transparency in Shading is set to "On" and create the 3D window. Then copy with a 2D marquee and paste into a new window ("remove redundant lines" should be checked) and then you've got a very editable line drawing of the 3D view. This is pretty quick.

It's not exactly what you asking (want), but here is alternative way for detailed presentation (see attached file).

p.s.: in attached image there are no transparent materials. Just have used special menu functions to show hidden lines.

p.p.s.: You can use both methods (this one + Richard Morrison's) together to draw what you want a little bit faster.

I can't do it. What "special menu function" ?

I can do it by saving a 3D view shaded and paste a 3d hidden line on top of it. ?

See what happens. You ask a simple question and find a technique that you didn't know of. Somehow I never got this one before. This one is good for this situation and many others....... thank you Richard
